This piece, a bronze sculpture created by William Kilpatrick in 1988, was commissioned by the City of Orlando and depicts former Orlando mayor William “Billy” Beardall hugging a child who is holding an outstretched hand to a hovering bird. According to Kilpatrick, the bird represents youth “flying into the future.”
In advance of the “Great Public Art Challenge” on April 12th, here are a couple questions…
- What is the official name of this sculpture?
- What other name is given for its title?
I’ll update this post on Wednesday with links to more information.
Update:
Well, I guess I stumped everyone! The official title of this sculpture is “Cycle of Life”, although the name “Coming full circle” is also listed on the Beardall Senior Center web page. I guess it’s possible that there are two sculptures of former Mayor Beardall on the grounds, but from the research I was able to do, I think that these two names refer to the same piece.

I thought I’d commented on this one with the name, but I guess I must have closed the window or gone to another site prior to clicking “Post” and forgot about it.

There was a $1 million up for grabs if you had answered it correctly … guess that will go back in the pot.
