When is a leap a flop?

Brian FeldmanIf you happened by City Hall on Friday, February 29th, 2008, you probably noticed a bunch of flags surrounding the far corner of the plaza. In the middle of all of that was Brian Feldman, leaping from a mobile warehouse ladder 366 times to ask the question, “What are you doing with your extra day?”

The idea wasn’t bad. It had the potential to draw an audience. The problem was the implementation. The flags, sheets and banners that surrounded the “leaping pit” made it difficult to see what was going on from a distance. It looked like a used car sale. Once you got up close, you could see what was going on, but there was no reason to stick around for more than a couple leaps.

Anyway, if you happened to miss all of the fun, here are a few pictures. I’ve even included a picture of the leap as it looked on the OrlandoSentinel.com website. Oooh, fun.

Thanks for the post. I happened to drive by the set-up, and was wondering what it was.

Thanks for covering this performance, Chad!

Just to clarify, in case you didn’t pick up a program or read the Artist Statement, the point wasn’t to stick around for more than a leap or two. This was about spectators (not necessarily in attendance on-site*) considering how they spend “their” extra 1,440 minutes, not mine; hopefully by taking a chance and doing something they’d never done or dreamt of before, something they thought not possible. If they spent it all day watching my “Leap Year Day” performance, they will have indeed wasted it. Yes, this should have been pointed out on the website. My only defense? Hindsight. *thanks to the Sentinel’s webcast

Brian … Thanks for stopping by.

I watched the event’s press conference earlier in the week and heard you mention that people should think about what they are doing with their extra minutes. I guess the message wasn’t as clear when the event took place. Maybe I should have poked around a little more for one of those programs.

Anyway, still fun and different. Let us know if there’s anything else coming up!

By the way, this is my second favorite headline of all the “Leap Year Day” coverage. Totally unanticipated the word “flop,” but have laughed harder than the landing!
