When I first read that The REP theatre was going to put on a production of “It’s a Wonderful Life”, I had mixed emotions. For me, the film is such a holiday classic that I wondered how it could possibly be re-assembled and performed on stage.
After seeing the production, however, I can say that the end product turned out pretty well.
If you’re a loyal fan of the film, you may be a little bit confused at first with the opening act, as it opens with George Bailey already on the bridge contemplating suicide. Movie buffs know this scene doesn’t come in until the middle of the film. My advice is to just sit back and enjoy this stage version, don’t try to compare everything to what’s similar or dissimilar to the film.
Some of the highlights of the production include performances by Annie Lauren Maleski, who plays George’s loyal wife, Mary. She displays an excellent range of emotions during her scenes courting George, falling in love with George, and fighting with George. One hidden gem in this stage adaptation is Michael Hughes who plays a deliciously mean Henry F. Potter. His grimaces and rough tone make you know just what George is up against. The only downside is that Hughes doesn’t get a lot of stage time, so audience members have to enjoy the few scenes in which he appears.
The show runs now through Dec. 22. Show times are Fridays at 7 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for ages 18 and under, and $15 for adults. Call 407-896-7365 for more information.
