Friday Favorites - Rainy Day Activities

Rainy days are good for taking long naps and enjoying some quite time alone. Well, sometimes they are. For those days where you still want something to do, here are our favorites …

I love rainy days. I don’t mind getting a little wet and “soaking” up all the activities I would also enjoy on a bright, sunny day (in fact, I would argue that a little rain makes being outdoors much more tolerable for me than the heat and burning sun). But, since not everyone enjoys looking like a dog that just ran through a big puddle, my suggestion for avoiding the elements is to check out DisneyQuest at Downtown Disney West Side. Now, I will offer this disclaimer – I don’t really care for most video games (though give me a nice game of skee ball anytime), nor do I care for places that are loud and bursting at the seams with running children. So, this is not a place I recommend going on a day when the weather is nice enough to enjoy other activities. But, as a rainy day spot it’s got something for everyone – games to keep the children occupied while parents sip on coffee, lounge in plush chairs and enjoy snacks from DisneyQuest’s indoor Cheesecake Factory. And for people like me who are grown-ups (mostly anyway) without children, it’s a great place to be a kid again while still treating yourself to a thick slice of peanut butter cookie dough cheesecake (my favorite).

My favorite rainy day activity is hiding out in a movie theater, especially West Orange 5 in Ocoee. The five theaters are smaller than most and only one of them offers stadium seating, but you can’t beat the price of admission, which is about a dollar or two less than the larger, chain theaters. One huge plus for West Orange 5 is their snack bar and really cheap prices. Forget paying $7 for a small popcorn and a Coke. Here you can get a variety of candy, priced from $1.50-$3, as well as made-to-order cheeseburgers, fries, and even whole pitchers of beer. One of the larger theaters inside even offers tables for you to put your snacks on.

On rainy days, I enjoy activities that can be done at a leisurely pace. Something like a tour through the Orange County Regional History Center in Downtown Orlando, where one can experience a dozen-or-so exhibits featuring Orlando’s past and present. A couple of hours at Glaze Under Fire, painting a masterpiece for the dinner table, is also enjoyable. An afternoon movie at the Enzian, or an evening with friends at The Wine Room are good choices, too. There’s really no favorite, only the desire to relax and to take it easy.
