Friday Favorites - First Dates

Where does one go on a first date in Orlando? Depending on the personalities of the individuals involved, the answer to that question could include just about anything. Here are our favorites …

There are a lot of great options for first dates in Orlando. For me, though, I’d start with a trip to The Wine Room in Winter Park. The atmosphere is completely relaxed and there are plenty of conversation topics readily available. You could talk about the wine, of course, but you could branch off and talk about traveling to places like France and Italy, too. Regardless of how well the conversation goes, the wine will always be there to sample and keep things moving.

As for dinner, I’d try to get a feel for what type of food my date enjoys during our time at The Wine Room. If they’re adventurous, I’d walk down to Bosphorous Turkish Cuisine for some great Middle Eastern-style food. If they’re more traditional, I’d walk down to 310 Park South for some slightly upscale versions of everyday favorites.

After dinner, you could take a stroll down Park Avenue or head over to the Winter Park Village for dessert at The Cheesecake Factory, a drink at Beluga, some pottery painting at Glaze Under Fire, or even just a movie. The possibilities are endless.

For me, the best first date is a place where a lot of action is going on. That way you’re never short on things to talk about. I’d recommend a high-energy locale, like Islands of Adventure. I know a theme park doesn’t sound romantic, but to me there’s nothing more attractive than a man that can’t stop smiling and laughing. Theme parks definitely bring that out.

I think the best place to go for a first date in Orlando is the Melting Pot in Dr. Phillips (additional locations in Longwood and Maitland). The atmosphere itself is so cozy and intimate that it’s hard not feel a little romantic as soon as you walk in the door. It’s rather dark – you can see your table mate, but the rest of the room, and the other patrons, fade away into the background. This is a fondue restaurant, so you cook your own food. That, combined with the fact that there are numerous courses (salad, cheese, meat and dessert), makes this dining experience a long one – perfect for spending time to getting to know your date. And, best of all, fondue naturally lends itself to sharing.

What could be more romantic?
