Free ice cream at Jason’s Deli

If you’re driving down East Colonial near the Fashion Square Mall and are in need of good food, I recommend that you head to Jason’s Deli. There, you’ll be able to select from a wide range of soups, salads, sandwiches and various hot entrees that are all quite tasty and extremely fresh. One of my favorites is the Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich, with its combination of marinated chicken breast, homemade guacamole, bacon, tomato, russian dressing, and swiss all grilled on whole grain wheat bread. If you try it, make sure you grab an extra napkin or two.

But the real fun of Jason’s Deli comes at the end of your meal. Free to all paying customers (at least as far as anyone has been able to tell) is a soft-serve ice cream machine, complete with cones, sprinkles and chocolate syrup. I’ve stuck with the chocolate and vanilla swirl each time I’ve been, but those of you who favor straight vanilla or straight chocolate are also covered.

While you’re in the restaurant, watch the opera that plays out in front of the ice cream machine. Every person that steps up to the machine must face the temptation that is free ice cream. Most people are able to limit themselves to what we’d all consider a normal portion. Others, however, aren’t so strong-willed.

I’ve seen people fill up 64oz Big Gulp cups with ice cream and chocolate sauce. Others build cones that are 6-, 8-, even 10-inches tall. Some of which don’t make it past the first turn before falling on the floor. If one of those “hidden camera” shows set up shop in Jason’s Deli, they’d get plenty of humor by pointing their cameras in the direction of the ice cream.
