The west side of I-4 in downtown Orlando can be a pretty lonely place at night if the arena and performing arts centre are empty. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on.

Located on the corner of Amelia and Hughey, the team of improvisational comedians at SAK Comedy Lab breathe life into the area five nights a week throughout the year. While the 250 or so audience members won’t cause any traffic delays upon leaving, they’re no less rowdy than the 17,000 fans during the fourth quarter of a Magic game and no less entertained than the 2,500 patrons at a performance of The Wedding Singer.

The shows at SAK each have a theme and always involve a lot of audience participation. From suggesting the topic for a skit to actually getting up on stage, audience members are vital to each performance. The most frequent theme is the “Duel of Fools” which features head-to-head competition between two teams of comedians. For these shows, three audience members are additionally selected as judges to determine the winners.

Things to know about the SAK Comedy Lab include the fact that there is no age limit and shows refrain from profanity and other adult topics that much of today’s comedy thrives on. Therefore. if you’re expecting a night out amongst adults, be prepared for a strong showing by the under-18 crowd at this comedy club. Also, the club doesn’t serve food or alcohol like the former Orlando Improv, but their snack bar does provide a selection similar to most movie theaters. I recommend the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.

Overall, the SAK Comedy Lab is an excellent entertainment option.
