Friday Favorites - $25 Dinner for Two

As the title states, this week’s Friday Favorites topic is dinner for two for $25 or less. Sometimes, you have to be creative to keep the bill that low, especially when it’s not fast food or pizza. Luckily, there are a bunch of great places in town where you can get a great meal for a great price.

If I had $25 to spend on a meal and was looking to get the most flavor for my buck I’d go to Press 101 in the Dr. Phillips area. This wine bar/pressed sandwich and salad joint offers up a nice indoor atmosphere, with modern decor and a stylish waterfall effect behind the bar, as well as a refreshing outdoor patio area. The food is unique and tasty, and while $10 for a sandwich isn’t exactly a bargain, the flavor you get will seem well worth this relatively small dent in your pocketbook. Even for two people to dine on $25 you should be able to get some good eats and a glass or so of wine. As far as sandwiches, which are the restaurant’s “press” namesake, I would recommend the turkey and brie, which includes the crisp taste of green apple slices melted into the cheese, and is served with a great mixed greens salad. If you’re not starving you can probably even share this fairly sizeable treat with a friend and order a bit more wine to fill you up. The chicken and fruit salad is also a little bit of heaven on a plate. Give it try and you won’t be disappointed by the food or the expense.

In my book, the best dinner for $25 or under can be found at Yellow Dog Eats in Gotha. It’s a small restaurant in a small town, but the big flavors and big portions will bring you back over and over again. My favorite items are the ones off the smoker - the pulled pork sandwich and the half chicken. They also have excellent salads and sandwiches, including the “Puppy Love”, which features peanut butter, strawberry jelly, bananas and chocolate chips between two slices of whole grain bread. It’s breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert all in one. Another must-have is one of their side items - the cole slaw. I’m not sure what they use in the kitchen to make the stuff as good as it is, but I’m always wishing they had free refills on sides. Finally, the Yellow Dog Cafe is also a wine shop. If you open a bottle for dinner, you’ll probably be over $25 … but who’s counting?

By far the best place to spend $25 on dinner is Cafe Tu Tu Tango on International Drive. This is in the middle of one of the biggest tourist areas in town, however you can’t beat its interesting food and eclectic atmosphere. On any given night you may find belly dancers, painters, and palm readers inside and outside the restaurant. Entertainment and food for under $25.

So the question is …
Where is your favorite place to eat for $25 or less?

One of my absolute favorite UNDER $25 dinners is to pick up sushi and then head to Leu Gardens for an evening picnic. We have an annual membership, so it doesn’t cost us anything to get in.

If it’s a night when they are showing a movie on the garden’s big screen, the night gets even better. For those who are interested, they’ll be showing Moonstruck this Friday night (Oct. 5th).
