Severe weather in Central Florida

Last night, on the way home from dinner, I looked up and saw what I can only describe as the beginnings of a tornado amidst some very threatening dark clouds. While the fast-moving downshoot eventually dissolved away, the storm apparently went on to materialize into one of mother nature’s most destructive forces about 20 miles away in Eustis, Florida. Dozens of homes have been damaged or destroyed and power is likely to be out for the remainder of the day. Thankfully, only minor injuries have been reported.

When storms like this happen, the weather teams at the local news stations always break in to make sure everyone in the area has the latest information. While these break-ins are somewhat frustrating for those of us miles away, they contain potentially life-saving information for anyone in the path of the storm. Last night, the weather experts were on for a very long time.

So, if you’re visiting Florida or are new to the area, you’re bound to see some ominous-looking thunderstorms during the summer and fall months. Most of these storms come and go very quickly, leaving behind some well needed rain and cooler temperatures for the remainder of the evening.

If the storms should turn violent, all of the news media outlets - along with the theme parks and resorts - error on the side of caution. You’ll be sure to know when an afternoon thunderstorm is anything more than a reason to take shelter to avoid being drenched.
