In our look at the golf courses in the Orlando area, we continue with three very nice public courses and a private club close to home …
Public Courses
Stoneybrook West
Stoneybrook West is a fairly typical community golf course. Winding through housing, some swampland and amongst a few small bodies of water, the course has a great finishing six holes preceded by an opening twelve that has its share of good and ugly. The driving range is a water range, which I hate, but the overall facilities are very nice. This would probably be a fun course to play in a tournament, with the handful risk versus reward shots that the layout presents.

Celebration Golf Course
The Celebration Golf Course is a lot like Stoneybrook West, although there’s more swamp and fewer great holes. For players that don’t hit it straight off the tee, this course has trouble everywhere. Factor in some blind shots and a good amount of water and you get a golf course that is very difficult to feel comfortable on. A good score here is well-earned, but I’ve yet to see a good score on this course.

Falcon’s Fire Golf Club
Falcon’s Fire is a course that I’ve always enjoyed playing. From the first tee to the eighteenth green, the course plays out to a very consistent and elegant design. The rates are a bit high for me, but as one of the first facilities to include global positioning systems (GPS) on each cart, it seems that they’re putting the money to good use. The course has always been in great shape when I’ve had the opportunity to play there.

Private Course
Windermere Country Club
Windermere Country Club is the club to join if you want to feel good about your golf game. There’s not a whole lot of danger on this course until the final four holes, and even then you can play safe by hitting less club off the tee. The greens are normally in excellent shape and - with their flat surfaces - are the type where you can knock in a 40-footer with much greater frequency than other places. Lots of good scores can be found on this course, which is why it can be fun to play. But as a course to play every day, I’d like something with a little more bite.
