View From Above: Wet ‘N Wild

Wet ‘N Wild, located on International Drive just west of Kirkman Road, is Orlando’s oldest water park. Featuring 8 thrill rides, 6 multi-person rides, 2 kids rides, a lazy river, volleyball courts, and, of course, a wave pool, Wet ‘N Wild has continually expanded it’s offerings since being founded in 1977 in order to compete with the other water parks in the area, especially Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Starting in the center of the image is the heart of any water park - the wave pool. Directly above the wave pool (and a little to the left) is the main entrance off International Drive. To the right of the main entrance is the kid’s park. I remember spending many hours in the kid’s area when I was growing up in Orlando. I’d ride the two available slides over and over and over again.

To the right of the kid’s park is a series of slides that includes the Mach 5, The Flyer and The Blast. South of these rides are The Surge, Disco H20 and The Black Hole. The Black Hole is my favorite ride at the park, since you’re rushed down a winding tube in nearly complete darkness.

The lake at the bottom of the satellite image is where you can knee board (knee ski as they call it), although with the amoeba scare in Central Florida, I’m guessing many people are passing on that attraction. You’ll have to zoom in all the way to get a good look at the Der Stuka, the park’s steepest ride, which parallels the lake.

To the north of the Der Stuka are the remainder of the attractions, including the Lazy River, The Storm and another kids ride, Bubble Up. Not pictured in this satellite image is Wet ‘N Wild’s newest attraction, Brain Wash, which sounds amazing.

From the Wet ‘N Wild wikipedia entry

You begin traveling through a dark tunnel. All of a sudden you find yourself going down on a 53-foot vertical drop into a 65-foot domed funnel as your tube does a half pipe up and down the walls while water from every angle comes shooting out at you surrounded by a room with flashing lights, brain’s, and other mind blowing affects that makes you feel like your actually inside of a tornado.
