Friday Favorites - Comedy Venues

Friday Favorites This week’s task was to choose the best place to go for a laugh in Orlando …

In Orlando there are several comedy clubs, improv joints and humorous dueling piano bars. But, by far the most unique place to go for a laugh is the Adventurer’s Club at Downtown Disney Pleasure Island. The actors at this club are somewhat scripted in their nightly performances, but each has plenty of room for improvising and interacting with the bar’s patrons, making it hard to define their shtick or align it squarely in the “acting” or “goofing around” category.

The atmosphere here is unique - the club itself is designed to look and feel like a (fictional) 1930’s gentleman adventurer clubs, as depicted in Hollywood films of that era. I guess the best way to describe this unique venue is to call it “interactive.” Walking into the Adventurer’s Club you’ll see worldly artifacts adorning every wall. There is a common area as well as several rooms - including one room covered from floor to ceiling in exotic masks and another room decorated as a library - where zany actors intermingle with bar patrons, cracking jokes at their expense and from time to time performing pre-rehearsed “skits” that can, and often do, incorporate more improv and banter with the club goers.

Coming to the Adventurer’s Club always means you’re in for more than a few laughs and interesting entertainment. Soon you’ll be hooked as they welcome you into the fold with their new member induction - KUNGALOOSH!

I don’t know if comedy is a large part of the Orlando culture, but there are a couple places that I look to for a good show. First is the Orlando Improv in Downtown Orlando. While the Improv only hosts a big name once in a blue moon, there are usually a handful of shows that generate a buzz around town during the year. The other venue I find entertaining is the Comedy Warehouse at Pleasure Island in Downtown Disney. The shows are kept clean to maintain the family atmosphere of Disney, but they still provide a good laugh. The stadium seating is also nice, since you’re guaranteed not to be staring at the back of somebody’s head all night, whereas at the Improv, the tight quarters can be very distracting.

My favorite place to catch some comedy is Adventurer’s Club at Pleasure Island. This 1930’s adventure-themed club features crazy decor and several streetmosphere characters that play different parts. There’s a French maid, a butler, various members of the Adventurer’s Club and Pemilia Perkins, the club president. Throughout the evening the characters perform improv and sketch comedy in the different rooms in the club and no two shows are ever alike. TIP: Get there early before the club gets too packed. If you’re there around midnight, you’ll also get take the club’s official initiation pledge. Kungaloosh!
