The Knights of Central Florida

On Saturday, the University of Central Florida will host what may be the biggest football game in Orlando history. For the first time, the Knights - who previously played their games at the Citrus Bowl in Downtown Orlando - will play on campus grounds in their very own stadium. What once was a commuter school with a commuting football team is now a football program to keep an eye on.

While a new stadium may not seem like much, it provides UCF with much needed atmosphere. No longer will they be playing in an old, half-empty, no-frills concrete pit, but instead, they’ll be protecting their own turf within a stadium built for a growing program. It will be new, sold out, and full of energy. Exactly what football in the state of Florida is all about.

Adding to the enormity of the day will be the Knights’ opponent - Texas.

The Longhorns have been a powerhouse for many years and come into Brighthouse Stadium as the sixth-ranked team in the country. As of Wednesday, they are a 19-point favorite in the game. You can pretty much throw that number out the window, though, the Knights will be ready to play.

Win or lose, this game will go down as the latest step in UCF’s journey to become the next major college football program in the state of Florida. While I doubt many people are expecting UCF to win, I don’t know anyone in the Knight camp expecting UCF to lose.

After all, the new 12th man might be all UCF needs to get it done.

For those of you lucky enough to be going to the game, parking and tailgating information can be found on the UCF Athletics web site.
