Orlando Golf, Part II

Continuing our look at Orlando’s golf courses, here are four additional places to play in the area. If you have any thoughts on these courses or on other courses you’ve played, please drop us a line in the comments.

Public Courses

Walt Disney World’s Palm Course
The Palm is another typical Florida golf course that does nothing to separate itself from the pack. While there are a lot of fun holes with a lot of water and a lot of sand, there are no distinctive qualities that would make this anyone’s favorite golf course. As the other course that plays host to Disney’s PGA Tour event, professionals eat this course alive since it is short and soft, while amateurs have a little more trouble with all of the water and surrounding swampland. The Palm is not a course to avoid, by any means, just don’t expect to see something you haven’t already seen before.

Marriott Grande Pines Golf Club
Formerly known as the International Golf Club, the redesigned Grande Pines course has many quirks that will require your full attention throughout a round. From the abundant water to the built-up greens with sharp fall-offs on all sides to the awkwardly-placed dog legs that seem to cut in a little too early, there’s no lack of character on this layout. If the designers had a few more acres to play with, this might be a course to seek out and play again and again. Unfortunately, the course often feels restricted by its boundaries and therefore is not a course I’d play more than a few times.

Forrest Lake Golf Club
Located on the extreme northern edge of Ocoee, Forrest Lake is a golf course that locals love to play. For a very reasonable greens fee, you get a decent layout that’s kept in generally great condition that can be as challenging as you want it to be. While there are a couple holes that only a member could love (13 and 15), and even though the 429 dissects the property, Forrest Lake has never pretended to be anything more than a just a golf course and continues to work each day at being better than it was the day before.

Private Course

Isleworth Country Club
To be honest, there’s not a lot of talk around town about Isleworth’s golf course. Only since Tiger Woods moved in to the neighborhood has the course enjoyed any fanfare, and even then the only discussion is about the course’s length and how Tiger once shot 59. I’ve only played the course once and that was before the Tiger tees were built, but I remember the course to be fairly typical of a high-end country club. Big houses on the left, big houses on the right, well manicured fairways and greens and just enough difficulty to keep the everyday player interested (although I’m not sure if there is an everyday player at Isleworth). It’s probably the third or fourth best private country club in town, behind Bay Hill, Keane’s Point and maybe the Country Club of Orlando.
